Righty Cameron tosses two-hit shutout as Redbirds skunk Stingers

COTE ST. LUC, Que. – Jack Cameron tossed a two-hit shutout and Jonas Press parlayed three hits into four runs batted in as the McGill Redbirds skunked Concordia 13-0 in men's baseball at Gary Carter Field, Wednesday. With the mercy rule in effect, the game was shortened to five innings.

McGill, which improved to 7-4 overall, was the visiting team and scored in every inning, including five in the fifth. The Redbirds pounded out 14 hits in a blitzkrieg that avenged last week's 6-3 loss to the Stingers. It marked the first setback of the young season for Concordia, which dropped to 3-1-1.

Cameron, a rookie right-hander from North Vancouver, B.C., struck out six and walked three for a complete game victory. With his teammates playing errorless ball behind him, the 19-year-old economics freshman threw 88 pitches and retired 14 of 19 batters faced.

Press, a political science freshman from Toronto, batted third and went 3-for-4 with a double and a stolen base. He paired up with teammate Auguste Guern, a senior from France, who also collected four RBIs. Guern batted second with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate, one double and a pair of runs scored.

The Redbirds also had a solid outing from rookie centrefielder Jett Jarvis, a native of Petrolia, Ont., who batted leadoff and went 2-for-3 at the plate with three runs and a pair of RBIs.

Other multi-hit performances for McGill were registered by senior first-baseman Carlos Vallejos (2/4, 1 RBI) of Ottawa, and catcher Chris Bodine (2/3, 3R) of Bedford, N.Y.

Concordia's Cristian Talor broke up Cameron's bid for a no-hitter with an infield hit in the third inning, while teammate Simon Marjerrison had the other Stingers hit, a single to centre in the fourth.

Stingers starter Connor Melanson was saddled with the loss. In just two innings of work, he gave up four runs on five hits, with one walk, two hit batsmen and a strikeout.

McGill (7-4) will host the Montreal Carabins on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., before playing back-to-back doubleheaders on the road over the weekend. On Saturday, the Redbirds will confront Ottawa in the nation's capital, followed by a twin-bill against Collège Laflèche on Sunday in Trois-Rivières, Que.
