Guern shines as baseball Redbirds rally to snuff out Dragons' fire

COTE ST. LUC, Que. – An RBI double by senior Auguste Guern gave McGill a 3-2 victory and a doubleheader sweep over the visiting Collège Laflèche Dragons in collegiate baseball action at Gary Carter Field, Sunday.

McGill, which won the twin-bill opener 15-5,  improved its record to 6-4 overall in non-conference play.

The Redbirds were only able to muster four hits, all of them timely, compared to a wild 14-hit performance in the opener.

The Dragons took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, only to see the Redbirds rebound with one run in the bottom of the third and two more runs in the next inning, which stood up for the remainder of the game.

Guern, a political science senior from France, batted 1-for-2 with a walk, an RBI double and one run scored. He put McGill got on the scoreboard when he raced home from third on an RBI ground out to second base by Jett Jarvis, reducing the deficit to 2-1.

The Redbirds then rallied with two in the bottom of the fourth inning. Rookie infielder Brandon Kim singled to left on a 2-2 count to cash in freshman Jonas Press. Then Guern doubled to left on an 0-1 count, scoring Kim with the winning tally.

Left-handed starter Caden Welch collected the win. He pitched 5.2 innings, allowing a pair of runs on four hits, with four strikeouts, two walks and two hit batsmen. Nathaniel Factor came on in relief for the save. He faced five batters over 1.1 innings, struck out three and allowed one walk.

Thierry Fortin started for Collège Laflèche but left after two innings, with a 2-0 lead. He was replaced by Maxime Lachance, who was charged with the loss after giving up three runs on three hits and a pair of walks

McGill (6-4), has a busy week ahead with six games, beginning with a road game against Concordia on Wednesday (Sept. 14), slated for a 7:30 p.m. start at Gary Carter Field in Parc Trudeau. The Stingers won the first meeting of the season, a 6-3 victory on Sept. 6.
