CALGARY – A well-balanced offensive attack helped the top-seeded Trinity Western Spartans to a 3-0 win over No.5 McGill in the second semifinal match at the U SPORTS women's volleyball championship, Saturday, from the Jack Simpson Gym.
It was all Spartans from start to finish, as they finished with a 36.4 hitting percentage compared to 40 per cent by the Martlets en route to a 25-12, 25-19, 25-13 victory and a spot in the national final.
McGill's best source of offence all night was
Victoria Iannotti, named as their player of the game, had a team-high nine kills. She was also the Martlets' most efficient attacker, leading the team with a 17.4 hitting percentage.
TWU put their offensive depth on full display as four separate players finished with at least eight kills over the three sets.
Savannah Purdy had a team-high nine, while
Meaghan Mealy,

The Spartans were able to frustrate their opponents right from the opening serve, as McGill finished with a -.037 hit percentage in the first set and were never able to find their rhythm from there.
The Spartans now move on to the gold medal match Sunday at 8 p.m. (EDT) where they will take on a fellow Canada West opponent in the Mount Royal Cougars. McGill will have to settle for a battle for bronze with the Alberta Pandas at 5 p.m. (EDT).
