MONTREAL – Rookie forward
Charlotte Guerin of Paris, France poured in a team-high 19 points but it was insufficient as the McGill women's basketball team suffered a 91-53 road loss against the UQAM Citadins on Saturday.
It was the second meeting in three days between the teams as the Martlets dropped to 0-6, while UQAM improved to 4-2.
The Citadins jumped out to an early lead that they never relinquished, up 20-12 after 10 minutes, extending the advantage to 44-28 at the half and 69-42 after three quarters.
The story of the night was told on the glass, with the home side grabbing 15 offensive rebounds against McGill's two. Playing a key role in that department was the 24 extra field goal attempts taken by the Citadins.
Similar to UQAM's story of Thursday night's victory at McGill,
Fredlyne Verrier and
Veronique Boivin led the charge with 23 points apiece. The duo combined for a red hot 17-for-32 shooting from the field. Boivin added a game-high four steals, while Verrier had five helpers.
The Red and White did show improvement shooting the ball themselves, going 19-for-51 from the floor and 12-for-15 from the free-throw line.
Guerin had the best game of her young promising career. The six-foot forward shot 80 per cent from the floor, dominating the game down low. She also had five rebounds, a pair of steals and a block, while making a consistent impact in the defensive end.
Front-court partner
Amelie Rochon of Levis, Que., also made an impact, scoring 15 points on a 5-for-8 effort from the floor and a perfect 5-for-5 from the charity stripe. Rochon made her presence felt in the paint as well, blocking three Citadins attempts in 24 minutes.
Other Martlets to find the scoresheet included
Sydney Foran with six points on 2-for-4 shooting from beyond the arc.
Iman Ibrahim added four points and
Emma-Jane Scotten had three.
Next up, McGill plays host to Laval on Thursday, Feb. 24. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
