OTTAWA –
Nicole Hunter scored twice, including the game-winner into an empty net, as Carleton nipped McGill 4-3 in women's university hockey at the Ice House Arena in the nation's capital, Sunday.
It was Ravens' second win in as many meetings with McGill, which owns a 105-7-1 lifetime record against Carleton.
The teams were knotted at 1-1 after the opening period but Carleton won the middle stanza 2-0 and McGill took the last period 2-1. After Hunter's empty-netter at 18:38 of the final period, the Martlets kept their goalie out for an extra attacker and narrowed the deficit to one when sophomore defenceman
Lydia MacLellan of Grand Forks, B.C. connected with just 14 seconds remaining.
Also scoring for the Martlets were forwards
Christiana Colizza of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., who tallied the game's first goal, and
Quynn Campbell of Toronto, who narrowed the gap to 3-2 at 7:39 of the third period.
Other marksmen for the Ravens were
Rhys Cole-Ashbury, in the opening period and
Annika Scurfield, late in the second frame.
Carleton held a 28-20 edge in shots and went 1-for-3 on power-play, while McGill was 0-for-3.
Carleton goalie
Marie-Eve Cote turned aside 17 shots for the win, while McGill's
Sophie Lajeunesse saved 24 and took the loss.
McGill, which dropped to 0-8-1, will return to the ice on Nov. 25 when they visit the Montreal Carabins (6-2-1) in a 7 p.m. puck-drop. The same night, Carleton (4-5-1) will play at division-leading Concordia (7-2-0).
MARTLETS MURMURS:
Marika Labrecque, a power forward on McGill's top line, dressed after a five-game absence due to an undisclosed injury. The fifth-year senior from Lac Etchemin, Que., has a career record of 39 goals 111 points in 140 games overall with the Martlets.
