MONTREAL – Freshman
Ann-Sophie Bedard tallied twice including the game-winner at 1:32 of double overtime as the visiting Bishop's Gaiters escaped with a 3-2 victory over McGill in women's university hockey, Friday, at McConnell Arena.
The Martlets opened the scoring at the 6:45 mark on a marker from sophomore defenceman
Olivia Pridham of Stouffville, Ont., who converted a three-way passing play with
Cassidy Stasiuk and
Michelle Ngan.
Bedard replied on a power-play with her first of two at 12:09 to knot the score at 1-1. McGill regained the upper-hand at 17:20 when senior forward
Makenzie McCallum of Morden, Man., netted her team-leading third of the season, assisted by
Meg Harley and
Mia Vaananen.
After a scoreless second stanza, the Gaiters forced overtime when
Angelique Page connected at 14:38 of the third period. A five-minute sudden-death period of 4-on-4 failed to resolve the stalemate, so the teams played another five-minute session but with only three skaters aside.
Bishop's had a 40-18 edge in shots but had a tough time solving goalie
Sophie Lajeunesse, a sophomore from Calgary, who made 37 saves in a losing cause. Gaiters starting netminder
Charley Wing made 16 saves for the win.
BU was 1-for-3 on the power-play, while the Martlets were 1-for-4.
McGill (0-7-1) has a day off before traveling to the nation's capital for a 3 p.m. matinee on Sunday against fifth-place Carleton (3-5-1). The same afternoon, Bishop's (5-1-2) will host the Montreal Carabins (5-2-1).
MARTLETS MURMURS: The game benefited the
Montreal Shoebox Project, a registered charity that collects and distributes gift-filled shoeboxes to women impacted by homelessness. The group works to fill shoe boxes with essentials that any woman might enjoy and delivers them to homeless shelters across the city. For those wishing to support this cause, more details are available on the McGill Women's Hockey Instagram page. Supporters can also assist with a monetary donation, on a GoFundMe page, which is active until Nov. 25 at 7 p.m. All proceeds raised will be used to purchase items to fill the shoe boxes.
