MONTREAL –
Emma-Jane Scotten scored a dozen points and
Charlotte Guerin registered double-double but it was insufficient as McGill fell 55-44 to Concordia in RSEQ women's basketball at John Dore Court, Saturday.
Both teams had entered the contest with a winless record after each dropped their first two games since the regular season opened the previous week.
The Stingers led 14-7 after the opening quarter, 27-21 at halftime and 40-30 after three stanzas, then edged McGill 15-14 in the final quarter. Concordia had a decisive advantage in both rebounds (34-27) and turnovers (26-21).
Areej Burgonio and
Rowena Blais paced the Stingers with 19 and 15 points, respectively.
Scotten shot only 3-for-10 from the field but drained six of seven free-throw attempts. She added a half-dozen rebounds and a pair of assists in a team-high 36 minutes of court time.
Guerin was the only other McGill player to score in double digits, collecting 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. She shot 3-for-4 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the line.
Other leading scorers for McGill were
Jessica Salanon and
Amelie Rochon, with seven points apiece.
The Martlets shot 34 per cent from the field (16/47), including a feeble 1-for-12 performance from three-point range, but drained an impressive 11 of 13 from the charity stripe. The Stingers shot 36.5 percent from the floor (19/52), 35.7 from the arc (5/14) and made 12 of 22 from the line.
McGill (0-3) returns to play on Nov. 17 when UQAM (2-0) visits Love Competition hall for a 6 p.m. tip-off. Concordia (1-2) travels to Quebec City to play Laval (1-1) on Nov. 19.
