HANOVER, N.H. – Senior
Georgia Kraus of West Hartford, Conn., potted two goals as the Dartmouth College Big Green defeated McGill 5-2 in women's preseason hockey at Thompson Arena, Sunday afternoon.
It was the third setback to an NCAA institution in as many days for McGill, which suffered losses at Cornell (6-0) and Yale (5-0) over the weekend and fell to 53-72-10 lifetime versus NCAA teams. The Martlets who skunked Dartmouth 6-0 in their last rendezvous on Oct. 13, 2019, are now 7-6-1 lifetime against the Big Green.
Dartmouth had a significant 40-26 edge in shots, including a 17-16 margin in the final stanza.
Rookie
Anika Cormier of Ste. Marie de Kent, N.B., ended the Martlets weekend scoring drought at 161 minutes and 43 seconds. The product of Rothesay Netherwood School found the back of the net on a power-play early in the third period. It was her second marker in nine preseason games.
Also scoring for McGill was freshman
Maika Lecavalier of St. Lazare, Que., who tallied her first in a McGill jersey at 10:02 of the final period and also registered an assist on Cormier's goal. The 5-foot-6 management freshman is the daughter of NHL player-agent
Philippe Lecavalier and a niece of retired Tampa Bay Lightning captain
Vincent Lecavalier.
Kraus opened the scoring for Dartmouth with a buzzer beater as the first period concluded, then struck again at 14:18 of the middle stanza to give the Big Green a 3-0 cushion.
Other Dartmouth scorers were
C.C. Bowlby,
Lauren Messier and
Celine Pietraszek.
Calgary native
Sophie Lajeunesse blocked 35 of 40 shots between the pipes for McGill and was credited with the loss. Dartmouth goaltender
Maggie Emerson started and stopped all six saves faced before being replaced at 10:20 of the middle stanza by
Elle Sullivan, who turned away 18 of 20 shots and collected the win.
The Martlets, who completed their preseason with a disappointing 0-9 record – seven of them on the road – will have almost two weeks to prepare for their RSEQ conference opener against Bishop's on Oct. 21 at McConnell Arena. Puck drop is 7 p.m.
