NEW HAVEN, CT –
Claire Dalton of Toronto, scored twice and reached the 100-point milestone as Yale University blanked the McGill Martlets 5-0 in women's preseason hockey at Ingalls Rink, Saturday.
It was the second consecutive game that McGill had been shutout as the Martlets dropped to 0-8 in exhibition play. The team is now 11-8-3 lifetime against the Bulldogs, who were playing their first preseason contest.
Dalton, Yale's team captain, opened the scoring with what proved to be the game-winner at 11:05 of the opening period. Less then three minutes later,
Kate Shaughnessy gave the Bulldogs a two-goal cushion at 13:32. Dalton then added her second marker at 15:42 to give the Bulldogs an insurmountable 3-0 advantage.
Naomi Boucher of Rimouski, Que., scored the lone goal of the second period at 18:06. It was the first career marker at the collegiate level for the daughter of former NHL head coach
Guy Boucher, a McGill grad who starred for the men's hockey squad in the 1990s.
Elle Hartje completed the scoring for Yale with a power-play goal at 14:19 of the final period, set up by by Dalton, whose assist was her 100th career point in 97 games overall for Yale.
The Bulldogs outshot McGill 47-10 as winning goaltender
Pia Dukaric merited the shutout. For McGill,
Sarah Carmichael from St. Lazare, Que., made 42 saves in a losing cause.
Up next for Yale (1-0) are back-to-back scrimmages against Brown and Princeton at Ingalls Rink on Oct. 15.
McGill concludes their lengthy nine-game preseason schedule on Sunday (Oct. 9) in Hanover, N.H., against Dartmouth at 3 p.m. The Martlets will then kick off the RSEQ regular season against Bishop's at McConnell Arena on Oct. 29 at 7 p.m.
