MONTREAL --
Charlene Robitaille,
Victoria Iannotti and
Rachel Leduc each reached double digits in scoring as McGill cruised to a 3-1 victory over the Montreal Carabins in the first inner city matchup of the women's volleyball campaign, albeit in preseason play.
The set scores were 25-21, 25-18, 20-25 and 25-16.
"There was good speed and intensity, it almost felt like a regular season game," said McGill head coach
Rachele Beliveau. "We played really well on defence again and I'm very happy about that. Offensively, were were solid and so was our serving. We have continued to show improvement throughout the preseason schedule and that's a good sign."
Robitaille, a senior middle blocker from St. Jean, Que., paced the attack with 12.5 points, on the basis of eight kills, one service ace and 3.5 stuff blocks, in addition to seven digs.
Iannotti, a fourth-year power-hitter from St. Laurent, Que., registered 11.5 points, with 10 kills, one ace and an assisted block, to go along with eight digs.
Leduc, an outside hitter from Montreal, who transferred from Camosun College in Victoria, B.C., tallied 10 kills, in addition to seven digs.
Florence Cloutier paced the Carabins with 16.5 points.
A few hours after the contest, McGill hosted UQTR in a controlled scrimmage, in preparation for their regular season opener next week. The Martlets, who won the RSEQ title for the first time last year, posted a solid 7-2 record in preseason play and will open defence of their league crown in Trois-Rivieres on Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. The official McGill home opener follows against the Carabins on Oct. 21.
