NCAA's Cornell Big Red blanks hockey Martlets in cross-border clash


ITHACA, N.Y. -- Gillis Frechette of Weston, Mass., scored twice and the Cornell University Big Red tallied three shorthanded goals en route to a 6-0 shutout over visiting McGill in women's hockey preseason play at the Lynah Rink, Friday evening.
 
The match-up was the fifth-ever meeting between these teams since they first crossed paths in 1973 and the Big Red now have a 3-2 edge in the series. McGill, which hasn't traveled state-side since a 6-0 win at Dartmouth on Oct. 13, 2019, fell to 53-70-10 lifetime versus NCAA teams.
 
Cornell outshot a young McGill lineup by a 27-8 margin, including a 10-3 advantage in the final period. McGill's roster features seven freshmen, nine sophomores, five juniors and four seniors.
 
Gabbie Rud opened scoring two minutes from puck drop to give Cornell an early lead. The Big Red dominated the middle stanza as Georgia Schiff scored at 7:01, followed by Frechette at 8:45, and Kaitlin Jockims with a shorty at 14:46 to give the hosts a 4-0 advantage after 40 minutes.

Ellie Zweber made it 5-0 at 8:38 of the third period and Schiff tallied the final marker at 18:47.
 
McGill netminder Sophie Lajeunesse, a sophomore from Calgary, made 21 saves in a losing effort.
 
Cornell used three goaltenders to combine for the shutout, with each playing 20 minutes, Deanna Fraser opened the game and made two saves for the victory. Belle Mende kicked aside three shots in the middle frame and and Brynn DuLac made three saves in the final stanza.
 
McGill went 0-for-4 on the power-play, conceding the three aforementoioned shorthanded markers, while Cornell was 0-for-3.
 
The Martlets (0-7) continue their annual Ivy League tour of NCAA opponents with games at Yale on Saturday and Dartmouth on Sunday. Both are slated for a 3 p.m. start.

Cornell (1-0) will play its final exhibition game on Oct. 15, when the Big Red plays host to Concordia, the U SPORTS defending national champions.
