Crafty Côté collects four as Carabins cruise past Redbirds

MONTREAL -- Thierry Cote, a junior  striker from Chicoutimi, Que., scored four times in less than 30 minutes as the No.3 ranked Montreal Carabins rallied for a 4-1 victory over McGill in men's soccer action at Percival Molson Stadium.

Tempers flared and seven yellow cards were assessed in the contest, four of them to McGill. The Carabins were flagged for 23 fouls compared to 14 by McGill.

U de M, which improved their league-leading record to 6-1-2, fell behind 1-0 when sophomore Joseph Getz of Vancouver, B.C., opened the scoring for McGill in the 21st minute. As halftime approached, thoughts of an upset started circulating.

But Cote then took matters into his own hands, scoring in the 43rd minute, then added three more in the second half, with goals in 55th 70th and 72nd minute, on a penalty-kick. he now sits second in the league scoring race with eight markers in nine contests, one shy of UQTR's Gabriel Wiethaeuper-Balbinotti.

The Carabins held a 27-9 edge in shots attempted, with a 15-5 margin in target. They had a lopsided 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.

U de M netminder Jordan Tisseur registered three saves for the win, while McGill's Ludovyck Ciociola made nine saves in a losing cause.

The Carabins (6-1-2) return to action on Oct. 16, when the head across town to take on third-place UQAM (4-2-3).

With four games remaining on the schedule, the sixth-place Redbirds (2-4-2) have an uphill battle to qualify for post-season play. They sit four points behind both Laval  and Concordia, who are tied for the last playoff berth with identical 3-2-3 records. McGill's remaining matchups are at UQTR (5-3-1) on Oct. 14, at home to Laval (Oct. 16) and Concordia (Oct. 20) and on the road at Sherbrooke (Oct. 23).
