Close but no cigar for Redbirds in season finale against Carabins

MONTREAL -- Defensive back Benjamin Labrosse of Greenfield Park, Que., scored on a 57-yard interception return but it proved to be insufficient as McGill fell 24-9 to the Montreal Carabins on the final day of regular season football before 3,000 at Complexe Claude-Robillard, Saturday.

Montreal led 7-0 after the opening quarter and took a 14-9 lead into halftime. There was no scoring in the third and Montreal won the final stanza 10-0, after McGill had what appeared to be a 69-yard TD toss nullified by an objectionable conduct penalty late in the contest.

Labrosse, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound cornerback, was also credited with four solo tackles. His TD tied the game at 7-7 with 5:47 remaining in the second quarter. The scoring major for Labrosse was McGill's first on an interception since Oct. 20, 2018 when Benjamin Carre ran back his second of the campaign for a 100-yard pick-six in a 31-19 victory at Concordia.

The second-place Carabins, who improved to 6-2, will host third-place Sherbrooke (4-4) in a conference semifinal on Nov. 5, slated to be televised nationally on TVA Sports.

The result marked the conclusion to a disappointing, albeit exciting 150th year and 141st season of football for McGill (1-7), which didn't play during both world wars, as well as the pandemic campaign of 2020.

The team is expected to lose a dozen graduating seniors, including WR Nicolas Baillargeon, WR Xavier Asselin, QB Gregory Segal, RB Jeremy Langevin, FB Simon Crevier, OL Alexandre Marcoux, OL Julian El-Hajj, DL Leo Tischhauser, DL Nicholas De Francisco-Paul, DL Nicholas McConnell, DB Tristan Fleury and LB Dimitrios Papanikolaou.
