PETERBOROUGH, ONT – Carter McKenzie scored twice and added four helpers as Queen's upset visiting McGill 13-7 in a key Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association contest, Saturday, at Miklas-McCarney Field.
 
It was only the third setback in 34 lifetime meetings with the Gaels for McGill (6-3), which hadn't lost to the Gaels in 18 years and had defeated Queen's 12-5 in their first meeting this season on Sept. 30.
 
The Redbirds scored first but Queen's pushed back for a 3-1 advantage after the opening quarter. The Gaels held a slim 5-4 lead at halftime but turned on the heat in the second half. They won the third stanza 4-2 and took the final frame 4-1.
 
Alex Erbstein tallied twice for McGill, with singles going to Isaiah Cree, Dylan James, Henry Fowler, Ethan Forgrave and Rowan Birrell.
 
Rounding out the scoring for the home side was Winston Bashford-Land with a hat-trick, followed by two apiece for Curtis Plante, Ryan Radisa and Reed Allen. Rounding out the scoring was Bryan Poetker and Noah Milsap.
 
Queen's took five of the nine penalties called in the contest.
 
Goaltender Quinton Greenfield was credited with the win, while Steven Pelliccione took the loss. Shot totals were not available.
 
With one game remaining before playoffs, McGill now faces a must-win affair against division-leading Trent (8-1) on Sunday (Oct. 23) in Peterborough, to clinch second place in the seven-team CUFLA East and host a sudden-death playoff game.
 
The Excalibur surprised McGill 10-8 in the season-opener on Sept. 10. A loss to Trent, would relegate McGill to fourth and translate into a playoff game on the road. The game will be streamed live for free and feature live stats.
 
The Redbirds hold the head-to-head tie-breaker in a two-way saw-off with Bishop's (7-3) or Queen's (6-3). The Redbirds also hold the edge in the event of a three-way tie. The Gaels will conclude their schedule on Sunday against last-place Ottawa (0-9).
