Iannotti paces McGill as Martlets master Montreal in volleyball home opener

MONTREAL -- Veteran power-hitter Victoria Iannotti of St. Laurent, Que., posted a masterful performance with 23.5 points as McGill defeated the Montreal Carabins 3-1 in the RSEQ women's volleyball regular season home opener before more than 500 at at Love Competition Hall, Friday. The set scores were 25-22, 14-25, 25-23 and 25-20.

It was the first defeat in three games for U de M and McGill's seventh consecutive victory over their cross-town rivals, dating back to the last loss on Nov. 29, 2019.

"It was a very spectacular game with lost of powerful hits on both sides," said McGill head coach Rachele Beliveau. "There were a lot of young kids in the stands and I'm sure that they were impressed.with that display of power tonight. It was quite a show."

Iannotti, a software engineering senior, registered her points on the strength of 18 kills and 5.5 stuff blocks over her four sets, to go along with a game-high 11 digs on defence.

Brook Brown, a six-foot power-hitter from Clearwater, Fla., was the only other member of the Martlets to reach double digits in scoring. The 20-year-old biology junior tallied 11 points on nine kills and a pair of service aces.Brown also collected six digs.

Beliveau noted the contribution of Olivia Krishnan, a 5-foot-6 libero from Niagara Falls, Ont., who came off the bench. The political science junior was credited with three digs and an ace but made a significant difference.

"She makes such an impact when she gets into a game," said Beliveau." She is a serve and defence specialist and back-up libero but every time she steps on the court near the end of a set, she seems to boost (our energy) that often seems to lead to the team scoring three or four points, which brings us back in a game or (cushions) our lead."

Setter Audrey Trottier amassed 36 assists, to go along with 10 digs, 2.5 stuff blocks, a pair of aces and one kill.

The Martlets improved to 2-0 in league play and will travel to Sherbrooke (0-2) for a game on Sunday (Oct. 30) at 1 p.m. The Carabins (2-1) will host UQAM (2-0) on Oct. 28.
