McGill's Katie Rathwell merits all-star status at UNB tourney


FREDERICTON, N.B. -- Katie Rathwell who led the McGill women's basketball team with 40 points in three games over the weekend, earned all-tournament honours at the UNB Helen Campbell Memorial Tournament, held at the Richard J. Currie Centre.

A psychology sophomore from North Battleford, Sask., Rathwell, was a bright spot on a gloomy weekend for the Martlets, who went winless at the tourney. The 5-foot-7 guard scored 10 points in Friday's season opening 77-35 loss to UNB, then added a dozen in Saturday's 64-57 setback to Cape Breton and 18 points a 67-53 loss to the Manitoba Bisons on Sunday.

In her performance against the Bisons, Rathwell played a game-high 37 minutes of court-time and went 12-for-29 shooting. She was also credited with four steals,
 
Manitoba had also entered the game with an 0-2 record after dropping their first two matchups, against Cape Breton (78-75) and UNB (96-76).
 
The Bisons won the first quarter 22-10, but the Martlets rallied to take the second 18-16. the teams battled to a 12-12 saw-off in the third stanza but Manitoba prevailed 17-13 in the final quarter.

Three members of the Bisons reached double figures in scoring, including Lauren Bartlett (17 pts), Autumn Agar (15 pts, 12 rbs) and Emily Johnson (14 pts).
 
McGill's Emma-Jane Scotten of Ottawa, Ont., also reached double digits with 12 points, while teammate Jessica Salanon of Ile-Perrot, Que., registered nine.

McGill forward Charlotte Guerin, of Paris, France., tallied five points and pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds, to go along with five blocks and three steals. Rounding out the scoring for McGill were freshmen Montrealers Ines Tchoukuiegno (6) and Tshiashikona Mbengo (2), inaddition to Joy Taan-Tobias (1).
 
McGill connected on only 24.7 per cent of their attempts from the field (18/73), went 11-for-30 from the three-point arc and drained six of 12 attempts at the charity stripe. Manitoba shot 41.8 per cent (23/55), drained five of 10 treys and shot 16 of 22 from the line.
 
The Martlets have two weeks to hone their game before hosting the annual McGill Redbird Classic Tournament, where they are scheduled to play three games in three days against the Edmonton- based MacEwan University Griffons (Oct. 14), followed by Laurier (Oct. 15) and Laurentian (Oct. 16).
