MONTREAL -- Emma-Jane Scotten scored 23 points and Tournament MVP Ines "Daniella" Tchoukuiegno added 15 as the McGill women's basketball team outlasted the Laurentian University Voyageurs 65-62 to capture the Martlets Classic at Love Competition Hall, Sunday.

It was the first tourney victory for the McGill women since sharing a title with Bishop's at the Gaiters Holiday Classic over the Christmas break in 2017.

The victory gave the Martlets a 2-1 record in the four-team, three-day event, tying MacEwan University from Edmonton. But McGill held the tie-breaker with a narrow 59-57 victory over the Griffins in Friday's opener. That win was McGill's first of the preseason after losing three consecutive contests. The euphoria was shortlived, however, after dropping an 87-42 decision to Laurier on Saturday.

Tchoukuiegno, a 5-foot-7 guard from Montreal, scored 37 points and grabbed a dozen rebounds in 86 minutes of court time over her three games. A 20-year-old freshman majoring in physical and health education, she shot 37.1 per cent from the floor (13/35) and registered a 6-for-16 effort from three-point range. The product of Vanier College added four assists, three steals and one blocked shot.

Scotten, an education junior from Ottawa, had 36 points and 10 rebounds over the weekend to merit a spot on the all-tournament team. She shot 45 per cent from the field (14/31) and was 5-for-17 from the arc. The 5-foot-9 guard added three steals and three assists.

The Martlets, which improved to 2-4 in preseason play, will have two more exhibition tuneups before starting the regular season on Nov. 3. They will bus to Waterloo next weekend to play a revenge match against Laurier on Oct. 22, then head to Guelph on Oct. 23.
