MONTREAL --
Sam Jenkins scored a game-high 19 points as McGill eked out a thrilling 61-60 victory over the visiting Ottawa Gee-Gees on Sunday, to close out the Redbirds Classic, a three-day tournament held at Love Competition Hall.
The result halted McGill's six-game losing streak in preseason play, including three setbacks to NCAA teams in August. McGill had opened their tourney with a disappointing 89-72 loss to Lethbridge on Friday, followed by a narrow 63-61 defeat to Saint Mary's on Saturday.
The win over Ottawa halted a four-game winless streak to the Gee-Gees since an 81-60 conquest at home on Oct. 28, 2017,
Jenkins, a 6-foot-5 senior from Hamilton, Ont., was McGill's top performer over the weekend and was named to the all-tournament team. In the three games, he tallied 55 points and collected 15 rebounds with eight assists, one steal and a blocked shot.
This marked the final preseason tune-up before the RSEQ regular season starts with three straight road games, beginning on Nov. 3 when McGill travels to Bishop's. The Redbirds play at Laval (Nov. 5) and Concordia (Nov. 12) before their home opener against UQAM on Nov. 17.
