OTTAWA – Matthew Beaudet from the Montreal borough of NDG, won gold and led McGill University to finish first of six schools in the men's division of the Capital Classic cross-country meet, Saturday.
 
It was McGill's first meet victory in five competitions dating back to Oct. 10, 2021, when the Redbirds claimed the Sherbrooke Invitational. Prior to that, the last time that the McGill men had won a competition was in 2015.

The Redbirds placed runners in first, fourth, fifth, ninth and 11th to score 32 points overall, edging out Queen's by one point. Ottawa was a distant third with 76 points, followed by Concordia (135), UQAM (135) and RMC (176).

On the women's side, McGill finished second of four teams (link to report).
 
Beaudet, a 22-year-old electrical engineering junior, finished first of 96 runners overall to collect his third career gold medal performance at the university level. A 5-foot-9, 145-pound distance runner who earned U SPORTS rookie-of-the-year and All-Canadian honours last season, Beaudet completed the six-kilometre course in 18 minutes and 37 seconds.

He was joined on the podium Jude Wheeler-Dee (18:44) and Roman Mironov (19:05), both from the Queen's Gaels.
 
Other McGillians in the scoring included Jack Stanley (4th, 19:13), a second-year doctoral student from Victoria, B.C., plus sophomore Tom Secheyron (5th, 19:18) of Bellevue, Wash., senior Felix Bedard (9th, 19:32) of Alma, Que., and Noah El Rimawi-Fine (13th, 19:40), a senior from Keene Valley, N.Y.
 
The team's third meet of the season is the Rouge et Or Invitational on Oct. 8, an 8k race on the Plains of Abraham near the outskirts of Quebec City.
