COTE ST. LUC, QUE –
Brad Marelich had a pair of hits, including a two-run double that proved to be the difference as McGill outlasted Queen's 9-7 to salvage a baseball doubleheader at Gary Carter Field, Saturday.
The Gaels, who own a 9-3 record overall, won the opener 3-1 over McGill to snap the team's eight-game win streak. But the Redbirds took the wild nightcap improving their record to 13-5 overall.
When McGill exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the first inning, it appeared that applying the game-shortening mercy rule was imminent. But that couldn't be further from what transpired as the Gaels battled back to outscore McGill 7-2 the rest of the way.
Marelich, a 19-year-old economics freshman from Pasadena, Calif., batted 2-for-4 from the clean-up spot, and scored a pair of runs. With McGill leading 7-5 in the bottom of the fourth inning, the 6-foot-1, 185-pound first baseman smacked a one-out double to left field, cashing in both
Jonas Press of Toronto, who had singled and Honolulu native
Milo Young, who had walked.
McGill's other multi-hit performance was from the bat of catcher
Chris Bodine, a freshman from Pound Ridge, N.Y., who went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a base on balls.
Queen's had four players with two hits apiece, led by right-fielder
Rowan Radzinski, who batted 2-for-2 with three walks, three runs scored and an RBI.
The Redbirds deployed five pitchers to snuff out numerous fires and
Marcus De La Cruz was credited with the win in relief of starter
Caden Welch, a southpaw from Langley, B.C., who lasted 3.2 innings. Welch allowed five runs on seven hits, to go along with five walks and four strikeouts.
Queen's starter
Logan Blower took the loss, allowing seven runs (five earned) on six hits in three innings. He walked four and struck out none.
Both teams are back in gear on Sunday (Oct. 2), with Queen's playing a noon doubleheader at Concordia, while McGill makes a two-hour jaunt to the nation's capital to confront the Ottawa Gee-Gees.
