Jordan Leishman tossed a complete game two-hitter, leading the visiting Queen's Gaels to a 3-1 victory over McGill in the opener of a baseball doubleheader at Gary Carter Field in Trudeau Park, Saturday.
The setback halted McGill's win streak at eight as the Redbirds record tumbled to 13-5 overall.
In seven innings of work, Leishman threw a 76-pitch gem and faced just 25 batters. He allowed one run while striking out four and walking one.
Leishman lost his bid for a no-hitter in the bottom of the third inning when Will
Will Bompey smacked a leadoff triple to centrefield but was stranded..The other McGill hit occurred in the fourth inning when
Jonas Press, a freshman from Toronto, singled to left.
The Gaels, who outhit McGill 6-2, took an early 2-0 lead with runs in the first and second innings. McGill countered with one in the third but the Gaels regained their two-run cushion with one more in the fifth inning.
Queen's offence was led by shortstop
Mazwell Yuen, the leadoff batter who went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and one run scored.
Right-handed pitcher
Gabriel Braun started on the mound for McGill and took the loss. In five innings of work, he allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits. he struck out seven and walked four.
The second game of the doubleheader is slated for a 3 p.m. start with lefty
Caden Welch expected to start.
