MONTREAL –
Joshua Archibald, a co-captain with the McGill Redbirds, is ranked 17th among the Top 20 prospects announced by the Canadian Football League's Scouting Bureau, Thursday.
Fifteen players from U SPORTS, including two sets of brothers, were listed on in the second edition of the top candidates eligible for the 2022 CFL Draft. The Scouting Bureau, composed of scouts, player personnel directors and general managers from the league's nine clubs, releases its prospect rankings in fall, winter and spring editions each year.
Nine U SPORTS institutions were represented on the list with five schools featuring multiple players. Saskatchewan and Alberta led all programs with three prospects apiece.
A 24-year-old economics senior from Montreal, Archibald's stock rose significantly after participating at the College Gridiron Showcase in Fort Worth, Texas, Jan. 8-12. The 6-foot-3, 258-pound rush end, is a two-time RSEQ conference all-star who has drawn some interest from the NFL's New York Giants. In 28 regular season contests over his career at McGill, Archibald registered 48 solo tackles and 36 assisted for 66 total tackles. He racked up 17 tackles for loss, including 10.5 quarterback sacks. He was also credited with four knockdowns, five forced fumbles and a pair of fumble recoveries, including one returned 39 yards for a touchdown.
The Calgary Dinos twin brother act of
Jalen and
Tyson Philpot, both wide receivers from Delta, B.C., are ranked second and fifth, respectfully. It is believed to be the first time in U SPORTS history that siblings were listed in the Top 5 for the same draft year.
The Waterloo Warriors duo of
Tre and
Tyrell Ford, both from Niagara Falls, Ont., are slotted in at sixth and ninth, respectively.
Rounding out the Top 20 list are five prospects from the NCAA. Last year, 18 of the 20 prospects identified in the winter rankings were selected in the 2021 CFL Draft. Five of the nine first-round selections appeared in the winter rankings.
