MONTREAL – Two athletes from McGill University are among the three RSEQ football players of the week.
Mathieu Soucy of Quebec City, and
Antoine Couture from Montreal, were named on offence and special teams, respectively, for the period ending on Sept. 5, 2021. The weekly defensive honour went to Laval's
Samuel Gagné.
Soucy, a 6-foot-1, 192-pound wide receiver, had five receptions for 100 yards and a pair of touchdowns as McGill defeated visiting Sherbrooke 21-18 at Percival Molson Stadium, Saturday. The 25-year-old economics senior put the Redbirds ahead 8-0 at 8:22 of the second quarter on a two-yard touchdown reception, then added a 39-yard TD catch at 6:50 of the third quarter, to give McGill an 18-11 lead.
Couture, a 5-foot-11, 193-pound rookie kicker, scored nine points and made both of his field-goal attempts, while averaging 36.0 punting yards and 61.3 on kickoffs in McGill's win over Sherbrooke. The 21-year-old psychology sophomore connected on field-goals from distances of 28 and 24 yards and added a 46-yard punt single to open the scoring late in the second quarter. His first field-goal tied the game at 11-11 and his second proved to be the margin of victory. He finished the day with 12 punts for 432 yards and three kickoffs for 183 yards.
Gagné, a 5-foot-11, 205-pound linebacker from
St. Augustin de Desmaures, Que., had a 65-yard interception return in Laval's 33-7 victory at Concordia last Saturday. The 21-year-old rookie also registered a team-high 4.5 tackles, including a quarterback sack.
