SOCCER (w): Rookie Lightfoot earns shutout in first career start as Martlets battle Bishop's to scoreless tie

LENNOXVILLE, Que – The McGill women's soccer team battled Bishop's to a 0-0 draw in league play at Coulter Field, Sunday.

It was the first career start and shutout for 5-foot-5 Martlets goalkeeper Jasmine Lightfoot, a 19-year-old science freshman from Montreal's West Island region, who made the team as a walk-on and was credited with four saves for the tie.

Anne-Marie Ulliac, the Gaiters counterpart at the other end of the pitch, registered a pair of saves for her own clean sheet.

McGill has now posted four consecutive whitewashes over the Gaiters and extended their head-to-head shutout sequence to 436 minutes dating back to the 14th minute of a 3-1 victory on Sept. 21, 2018.

"They are a much-improved team with a full-time coach who recruits," noted McGill bench boss Jose-Luis Valdes, whose Martlets improved their lifetime record against Bishop's to 55-0-3 since the Gaiters joined the league in 1992.

"It took us a while to get into our rhythm today. In the second half, we finally started connecting passes and managing to get through their defensive structure and create some attacks. But they defended quite well and eliminated most of our offensive chances before we could get near the goal."

McGill had a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks. There were no cards issued but Bishop's was assessed 11 of the 17 fouls called in the contest.

The Martlets, who now own a 1-2-2 record in the RSEQ conference standings, remained fourth in the eight-team league, just one point ahead of Bishop's (1-3-1). The teams are slated to meet one more time, on Oct. 31 -- the final day of the regular season -- at Percival Molson Stadium.

McGill's next game is slated for Friday, Oct. 1 when they play host to Concordia (1-3-1) in a 6 p.m. kickoff at Percival Molson Stadium. The Gaiters will play at Sherbrooke (1-4-0) the same night.
