Montréal whitewashed McGill 3-0 in RSEQ men's soccer at Stade CEPSUM, Thursday.
U de M, which has outscored opponents 12-3 thus far, improved to 3-0-0 and sit alone atop the RSEQ standings, six points ahead of the Redbirds (1-3-0). The Carabins have now won six consecutive meetings with McGill since a 0-0 draw on Oct. 20, 2017.
Olivier D'Anjou was credited with the game-winning tally in the fifth minute of play.
Thierry Coteau made it 2-0 in the 22nd minute.
Lohan Lefebvre put the contest out of reach in the 63rd minute.
The Redbirds had a 5-4 edge in shots on net but couldn't solve Carabins 'keeper
Felix Goulet, who made five saves for the shutout, the team's first clean sheet of the season. The Carabins had a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
For McGill, 6-foot-1 goalkeeper
Victor Henry registered four saves and took the loss. The acrobatic science freshman was shaken up after a collision near the top of the box about five minutes into the second half. Henry charged out to confront Carabins striker
Nassim Kemel who was in alone on a through-ball. Henry broke up the play, stayed down for a few minutes but remained in the game. Kemel recovered the ball and fired a volley towards the vacated net but 6-foot-1 defender
Martin Baudelet saved a goal by blocking the attempt.
The game featured 22 fouls, including 14 called on the Carabins. There were a couple of yellow warnings issued by referee
Robert D'Alessio, both to McGill defenders, namely
Jack MacDonald (51') and
Chris Flores (90').
McGill (1-3-0) will host Concordia (1-1-2) on Oct. 1 in an 8:15 p.m. start at Molson Stadium.
