MONTREAL –
Corinne Leclerc of Shawinigan, Que., posted a bronze medal finish as the McGill University women's cross-country team opened their 2021 season with a second-place standing overall at the McGill Invitational meet on the slopes of Mt. Royal, Saturday.

Leclerc, a 23-year-old master's student in architecture who transferred to McGill this year from the Montreal Carabins, led the Martlets completing the four-kilometre circuit 13 minutes, 52 seconds. She was 18 seconds behind race-winner
Jessy Lacourse of the Laval Rouge et Or, who finished atop the podium, in 13:34. Laval teammate
Catherine Beauchemin took the silver in 13:49.
Other leading scorers for the McGill women included senior
Chloe Fleurent-Gregoire, a native of Laval, Que., who was sixth in 13:57, followed by sophomore
Emma Betty (7th, 13:59) of Ottawa, freshman
Sophie Rashid-Cocker (8th; 14:01) of Toronto and senior
Maia Watson (19th; 14:34) of Victoria, B.C.
The Rouge et Or won the meet with 32 points, placing scorers in first, second, fourth, 11th and 14th. They were followed by McGill (43), Montreal (57), Sherbrooke (111), UQTR (153), Concordia (185), Ottawa (200) and Carleton (222). Three other universities competed (UQAC, UQAM and ETS) but had less than the five runners required for team scoring.
The next race on the agenda is the Capital Cross-Country Challenge, a 6k race in Ottawa on Oct. 2.
