David Urquhart has been appointed full-time head coach of the McGill University men's hockey team.
A 2018 inductee to the McGill Sports Hall of Fame, Urquhart has spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach of the San Diego Gulls, an American Hockey League affiliate of the Anaheim Ducks. During that span, he helped guide the team to a 92-60-17 record in regular season play and three playoff berths.
The 36-year-old native of Thorold, Ont., becomes the 30th bench boss in team history and the 13th former McGill player to take the helm of the historic 144-year-old program, which played its first game on Jan. 31, 1877.
He replaces
Liam Heelis, who was serving as interim bench boss.

Geoffrey Phillips, executive director of McGill Athletics and Recreation. "His experience and leadership in winning championships at both the university and the professional levels, will no doubt further enhance our tradition of excellence, both on the ice and in the classroom. I would like to sincerely thank Liam for leading the program through a very challenging period."
Previously, Urquhart played for McGill and served four years as a full-time assistant coach under the direction of
Kelly Nobes. He also was head coach of the Serbian national team at the 2018 IIHF Div. 2 world hockey championship.
"I'm proud to be part of a McGill hockey tradition that has been integral in the development of student-athletes for such a long time," said Urquhart, who graduated from McGill's Desautels school of management in 2008, majoring in finance and entrepreneurship. In 2019, he completed a master's degree in sports psychology at McGill. For his thesis, he interviewed six of the most successful coaches in U SPORTS and the NCAA to discuss their coaching vision and learn how they built cultures of excellence to win multiple national championships for their respective programs.
"The pandemic has provided the program an opportunity to reset and begin a new era with a new name and vision," added Urquhart. "This vision will build upon the culture of excellence and traditions that were cultivated by the coaches that came before me. I look forward to rejoining the team and connecting with the recruits, student-athletes and alumni."
During his McGill playing career, Urquhart was a three-time OUA all-star from 2004 to 2008. He also merited All-Canadian honours -- earning a berth on the second team in 2006-07 -- and concluded a brilliant university career with 23 goals and 107 points, along with 330 penalty minutes, in 147 games overall.
More than a dozen years after his last varsity contest, he remains tied with
Mike Babcock as the ninth-highest overall point-scoring defenceman in McGill history. He trails

Named to the OUA all-rookie squad during his freshman year, Urquhart won the Bobby Bell Trophy as Team MVP in his third collegiate season and then went on to captain McGill to a Queen's Cup championship in 2008, the team's first league title since 1946.
Fluent in three languages -- including French and Italian -- Urquhart was a two-time OUA conference nominee for the Randy Gregg trophy, awarded nationally for combining hockey ability with academics and citizenship. He made the Principal's Student-athlete Honour Roll, merited Academic All-Canadian honours, won the Richard Pound Trophy for athletics leadership over his McGill career and received the University's prestigious Gretta Chambers Award for student leadership.
Urquhart went on to a solid professional career, including stints in the AHL with Hartford (2008-10) and Hamilton (2010-11), where the six-foot, 195-pound rearguard played 130 regular season games, scoring six goals and 23 points to go along with 78 penalty minutes. He also had stints in the East Coast Hockey League with Charlotte and Wheeling. He then headed overseas to play for three years in Italy, where he patrolled the blueline for teams in Valpellice (2011-12) and Pontebba (2012-13) before guiding Ritten-Renon to a league championship in 2014.

Urquhart nommé entraîneur-chef de hockey masculin à McGill

David Urquhart a été nommé entraîneur-chef à temps plein de l'équipe masculine de hockey de l'Université McGill.
Intronisé en 2018 au Temple de la renommée des sports de McGill, Urquhart a été entraîneur adjoint des Gulls de San Diego, filiale de la Ligue américaine de hockey des Ducks d'Anaheim, au cours des trois dernières saisons. Pendant cette période, il a aidé l'équipe à conserver une fiche de 92-60-17 en saison régulière et à participer aux séries éliminatoires à trois reprises.
Âgé de 36 ans, le natif de Thorold, en Ontario, devient le 30
e pilote de l'histoire de l'équipe et le 13
e ancien joueur de McGill à prendre les rênes du programme historique de 145 ans, qui a disputé son premier match le 31 janvier 1877.
Il remplace
Liam Heelis, qui occupait le poste d'entraîneur-chef par intérim.
« Nous avons effectué une recherche à l'échelle nationale et nous sommes très heureux d'accueillir Dave à nouveau pour son troisième passage au sein du programme », a déclaré
Geoffrey Phillips, directeur exécutif du Service des sports et activités physiques de McGill. « Il ne fait aucun doute que son expérience et son leadership dans la conquête de championnats, tant au niveau universitaire que dans les rangs professionnels, contribueront à perpétuer et renforcer notre tradition d'excellence, tant sur la glace qu'en classe. Je tiens à remercier sincèrement Liam d'avoir dirigé le programme au cours d'une période très difficile. »
Auparavant, Urquhart avait joué à McGill et il été entraîneur adjoint à temps plein sous la gouverne de
Kelly Nobes. De plus, il avait également été entraîneur-chef de l'équipe nationale serbe lors du championnat du monde de hockey masculin de deuxième division de la FIHG en 2018.
« Je suis fier de faire partie d'une tradition de hockey à McGill qui fait partie intégrante du développement des étudiants-athlètes depuis si longtemps », a déclaré Urquhart, qui a obtenu son diplôme de la Faculté de gestion Desautels de McGill en 2008, avec une spécialisation en finance et en entrepreneuriat. En 2019, il a terminé une maîtrise en psychologie du sport à McGill. Dans le cadre de sa thèse, il a interviewé six des entraîneurs les plus décorés de U SPORTS et de la NCAA pour discuter de leur vision en tant qu'entraîneur et apprendre comment ils ont créé une culture d'excellence pour remporter de nombreux championnats nationaux à la tête de leurs programmes respectifs.
« La pandémie a donné au programme l'occasion de prendre du recul et d'entamer une nouvelle ère avec un nouveau nom et une nouvelle vision », a ajouté Urquhart. « Cette vision s'appuiera sur la culture de l'excellence et la tradition qui ont été cultivées par les entraîneurs qui m'ont précédé. Je suis impatient de me joindre à nouveau à l'équipe et de prendre contact avec les recrues, les étudiants-athlètes et les anciens. »
Au cours de sa carrière de joueur à McGill, de 2004 à 2008, Urquhart a été choisi trois fois parmi les étoiles de la conférence SUO. Il a également été nommé au sein de la deuxième équipe d'étoiles canadienne en 2006-2007 et a conclu sa brillante carrière universitaire avec 23 buts et 107 points, ainsi que 330 minutes de pénalité, en 147 matchs.
Plus d'une douzaine d'années après sa dernière rencontre universitaire, il partage toujours le neuvième rang avec

Nommé au sein de l'équipe des recrues de SUO au terme de sa première campagne, Urquhart a remporté le trophée Bobby-Bell à titre de joueur par excellence de l'équipe à sa troisième saison universitaire, puis, en tant que capitaine, a mené McGill à la conquête du championnat de la Coupe Queen's en 2008, le premier titre de conférence de l'équipe depuis 1946.
Parlant couramment trois langues – l'anglais, le français et l'italien - Urquhart a été deux fois candidat de la conférence SUO à l'obtention du trophée Randy-Gregg, décerné à l'échelle nationale à un étudiant-athlète qui se distingue tant au hockey que dans ses études et dans la communauté. Au cours de son passage à McGill, il a fait partie de la liste d'honneur du recteur, a mérité le statut d'étoile académique canadienne, a remporté le trophée du leadership sportif Richard-Pound et a reçu le prestigieux prix du leadership étudiant Gretta-Chambers de l'Université.
Urquhart a ensuite connu une excellente carrière au niveau professionnel, y compris des passages dans la LAH avec Hartford (2008-2010) et Hamilton (2010-2011), au cours desquels l'arrière de six pieds et 195 livres a disputé 130 matchs de saison régulière, récoltant six buts et 23 points en plus d'écoper de 78 minutes de pénalité. Il a également évolué dans la Ligue de hockey de la Côte Est avec Charlotte et Wheeling. Il a ensuite disputé trois saisons en Italie, où il a porté les couleurs des équipes de Valpellice (2011-2012) et de Pontebba (2012-2013) avant d'aider le club de Ritten-Renon à remporter le championnat de la ligue en 2014.
