HOCKEY (w): Martlets outpeck Ravens in battle of the birds

OTTAWA – Jade Downie-Landry and Laura Jardin scored two goals apiece as McGill cruised past the Carleton Ravens 7-2 in RSEQ women's hockey at the CU Ice House, Sunday.

The result extended McGill's win streak to six as they improved to 9-2 overall, and 4-0 in league play. The Martlets upped their lifetime head-to-head record against the Ravens to 103-5-1 in 109 matchups.

McGill, which dominated the shots tally by a 44-27 margin, led 2-1 after the first period and 5-2 after two. The Martlets went 3-for-7 on the power-play and killed five of six penalties taken.

Downie-Landry, a fifth-year physical education senior from St. Jean, Que., also collected an assist to finish the soiree with three points. Her first goal, on a power-play, put McGill ahead 4-2 at 15:35 of the second period. The 5-foot-9 centre struck again at 15:46 of the final stanza to make it 6-2. Downie-Landry now leads the RSEQ conference in scoring with a 3-7-10 record over four contests.

Jardin, who hails from Calgary, put the visitors ahead 5-2 with 42 seconds left in the middle period. The science senior added an insurance marker with 2:05 remaining in the contest. She now has three goals in four league games, a single-season career-high after scoring only two in each of her first two seasons.

McGill defenceman Lydia MacLellan, an industrial relations  freshman from Grand Forks, B.C., also tallied three points, including her first career goal in regular season play to put her troops ahead 2-1 at 19:51 of the opening period.

Other Martlets snipers were Makenzie McCallum of Morden, Man., at 5:26 of the first period, and Christiana Colizza of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., who found the net at the 54-second mark of the middle period. Colizza now has four goals in as many games.

Carleton's goal scorers were Rhys Cole-Ashbury and Sydney Berta.

Fifth-year goaltender Tricia Deguire of Sherbrooke, Que., made 25 saves for the win, while Ravens netminder Marie-Ève Côté recorded 37 saves in a losing cause.

McGill (4-0) hosts Bishop's (1-3) on Friday (Nov. 12) in a 7 p.m. matchup at McConnell Arena. The Raven's (2-2) head to Montreal on the same day to play Concordia (1-3) at 7:30 p.m.
