HOCKEY (w): Colizza strikes twice as Martlets stretch win streak to five

MONTREAL – Christiana Colizza from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., scored twice, as the McGill Martlets hockey team secured a 4-1 victory over the visiting Ottawa Gee-Gees at McConnell Arena, Friday.

It was the fifth straight victory for McGill, which improved to 8-2 overall, including an unblemished 3-0 record in league play.

The Martlets led 1-0 after the first period and 3-0 after two. They had a 35-25 edge in shots and went 1-for-3 on the power-play, while Ottawa (1-2), went 0-for-1 with the extra attacker.

It marked the first meeting between these teams since Feb. 22, 2020, when McGill swept Ottawa in an RSEQ best-of-three semifinal series to qualify for the U SPORTS Final Eight championship in Charlottetown, a tournament that was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Colizza, a graduate student in kinesiology, opened the scoring on the first shift of the game, redirecting a shot from team captain Jade-Downie Landry of St. Jean, Que., only 45 seconds after the initial puck drop. Colizza later added an insurance marker to make it 4-1 at 10:18 of the final frame.

McGill dominated the middle period, connecting on the power-play at 10:10 from junior Makenzie McCallum of Morden, Man. About eight minutes later, Toronto native Quynn Campbell made it 3-0 with her first career goal.

Gee-Gee's forward Alice Fillion spoiled the shutout bid at 1:08 of the third period.

Fifth-year goaltender Tricia Deguire of Sherbrooke, Que., made 24 saves for the win, upping her career record to 82-49-1 in 137 games overall. Deguire ranks second in wins among McGill's all-time goalie leaders, nestled between a pair of Olympians. Charline Labonté posted a 155-16-3 record in 174 games overall with McGill, while Kim St. Pierre registered a 50-40-12 mark in 103 appearances.

Ottawa's Aurelie Dubuc recorded 31 saves and registered the loss.

McGill (3-0) travels to the nation's capital on Sunday (Nov. 7) to meet Carleton (2-1) in a 7 p.m. puck drop at the Ice House. The Gee-Gees (1-2) head to Lennoxville on the same day to play Bishop's (1-1) at 3:30 p.m.
