LENNOXVILLE, Que. –
Laura Jardin of Calgary scored once and set-up the game-winner to jump-start No.3 ranked McGill to a 4-3 road victory over Bishop's in women's hockey at Molson Arena, Sunday.
The result improved McGill's record to 13-4 overall, including a perfect 4-0 against Bishop's and an 8-2 mark in the RSEQ regular season.
The Martlets had a 42-18 edge in shots but only led 1-0 after the first period on a goal by senior
Marika Labrecque of Lac Etchemin, Que. They were deadlocked at 1-1 after two before McGill finally turned it up a notch, to win a wild final stanza 3-2. The offensive outburst was sparked by
Emma Piers, a freshman forward from Beaconsfield, Que., who tallied shorthanded at 5:11.
Jardin, a 21-year-old senior majoring in agricultural and environmental science, snapped a 2-2 saw-off with an unassisted goal at 11:55 of the final period. The 5-foot-6 centre then won a key faceoff in the waning moments and passed over to
Jade Downie-Landry, who found
Stephanie Desjardins of Grand Falls, N.B., for what proved to be the winning tally with just 70 seconds remaining in the contest.
It was the third helper of the game for Downie-Landry, a fifth-year veteran from St. Jean, Que., who leads the RSEQ conference and ranks third among the nation's scoring leaders with 20 points, including nine goals, in 10 games.
BU gave McGill a scare, however, when they pulled the goalie and
Neleh Vigneau-Sargeant scored her second of the game with 29 seconds remaining on the clock to make it a one-goal margin. The Gaiters other marksman was
Angelique Page, who created a 2-2 tie at 8:39 of the third period.
Tricia Deguire made 15 saves for the win between the pipes for McGill, improving her lifetime record to 85-51-1 in 142 appearances overall. At the other end of the ice,
Aglae Rene de Cotret made 38 saves in a losing cause for the Gaiters.
Only one referee worked the game instead of the usual two. McGill was 0-for-3 on the power-play and limited the Gaiters to a 1-for-7 performance. Despite a lopsided advantage in power-play opportunites for Bishop's, they drew 16 of the 30 penalty minutes dished out, thanks to a rare gross misconduct penalty (10 minutes). The infraction appeared to be called by one of the linesman and was assessed to BU forward
Majorie Bolduc for comments made after McGill's Labrecque was checked into the boards on an unpenalized play.
McGill, which leads the six-team RSEQ conference with an 8-2-0 record, will play next on the road game against the Montreal Carabins (5-4-1) at Arena CEPSUM on Friday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m.
Bishop's (3-7-0) plays at Carleton (3-7-0) the same time.
