MONTREAL – Team captain
Jade Downie-Landry tallied twice in a post-overtime shootout and added a pair of assists in regulation as No.3 ranked McGill skated to a 4-3 road victory over the Montreal Carabins in a women's hockey thriller at Arena CEPSUM, Friday.
The victory improved McGill's record to 9-2-0 atop the RSEQ standings and gave the Martlets a six-point cushion over third-place Montreal, which fell to 5-4-2.
After a scoreless first period, the Carabins opened the scoring in the middle stanza but McGill roared back to carry a precarious 2-1 lead into the third period. Montreal tied it at 2-2 early on, then McGill replied with what appeared to be a back-breaking goal at 15:44. But the Carabins bounced back 50 seconds later when
Annabel Faubert struck to force overtime. After two five-minute sessions proved fruitless, the teams advanced to the shootout, which McGill won 2-1.
Downie-Landry, a 5-foot-9 centre from St. Jean, Que., became the first McGill player ever to score twice in a shootout. The 26-year-old physical education senior tied up the penalty-shot session at 1-1 on McGill's third attempt, then added the decisive marker on the team's fifth shot. Dominant in regulation as well, she assisted on
Quynn Campbell's goal to knot the score 1-1 at 9:30 of the second period, then added another helper just 85 seconds later on
Stephanie Desjardins's go-ahead goal. Downie-Landry now leads the nation in scoring with 22 points, including nine goals, in only 11 games. She is tied with Saint Mary's forward
Shae Demale who has played 16 games.
Marika Lebrecque of Lac Etchemin, Que., scored her fourth of the season to put the Martlets ahead 3-2 with just 4:16 remaining in the third period. The fifth-year senior also added a pair of helpers earlier and now leads the country in assists with 14 in 11 games. Her 18 points on the season ranks second in the league and fourth across the country, surpassing the 15 points that she tallied in each of the previous two seasons. Labrecque, a certificate student in management who graduated with a physical education degree last spring, now has 98 career points, including 33 goals, in 120 contests overall.
Jessika Boulanger paced the Carabins with two goals and one assist but wasn't picked for the shootout. She put the Carabins ahead 1-0 at 2:01 of the second period and tied the score at 2-2 at 1:37 of the third frame.
McGill, which had a 42-35 edge in shots, went 1-for-6 on the power-play. The Carabins responded on one of their four chances.
Martlets goaltender
Tricia Deguire of Sherbrooke, Que., made 32 saves for the win, not including the four stops on five attempts in the shootout. Her record improved to 7-2 on the season and 86-51-1 lifetime in 143 appearances overall.
Aube Racine made 38 saves in a losing cause for the Carabins. She also stopped three of five shots in the shootout.
Both teams will close out the first semester with a game on Sunday (Dec. 5) afternoon. McGill will host second-place Concordia (7-3-1) in a 2 p.m. start at McConnell Arena, while Montreal plays at Bishop's (3-8-0) with a 3:30 p.m. puck drop.
