VOLLEYBALL (w): Sherbrooke sinks Martlets in first-place showdown

SHERBROOKE – Brook Brown of Clearwater, Fla.,scored a game-high 15 points but it was insufficient as visiting McGill stumbled 3-1 to Sherbrooke in an RSEQ women's volleyball showdown for first place, Friday. The Vert & Or won the first two sets 25-21 and 25-14 before McGill found their footing to take the third set 25-20. But Sherbrooke rebounded to prevail 25-19 in the final set.

The result snapped a three-game win streak for the Martlets, who tumbled into second place with a 5-3 record, while a veteran Sherbrooke squad improved to 5-1 with two games in hand. The Vert & Or had a slight statistical edge in most categories, including kills (49-46), service aces (5-2), stuff blocks (7-5), digs (62-58) and assists (44-40).

"It was a tough game against a tough team," said McGill head coach Rachele Beliveau. "Sherbrooke is a very mature, physical team. Our game was pretty close to normal offensively. We passed very well as a team on serve receive but their defence was the difference. We hit well and they were digging everything. We won some really good rallies and we defended well at times but not as good as Sherbrooke. They are the best defensive team that we've seen."

Another key area where Sherbrooke had the upperhand was in the hitting percentage where the host team had a 20.7 per cent success rate on their 135 attempted kills, compared to McGill's 12.8 success rate on 149 attempts.

Leading the way for Sherbrooke was Jael-Esther Telfort (14 points), Maude Frechette (11) and Catherine Lavigne (10.5).

Brown collected a game-high 13 kills, to go along with a pair of blocks, and added eight digs on defence.

Victoria Iannotti of St. Laurent, Que., was the only other member of the Martlets to reach double digits with 12.5 points. She had 10 kills, a pair of aces and an assisted block. Teammates Clara Poire of Blainville, Que., and Charlene Robitaille of St. Jean, Que., were both held to 9.6 points.

Sherbrooke (5-1) plays at Ottawa (0-5) on Sunday. McGill (5-3) will get a week to regroup and will head to the nation's capital to play the Gee-Gees on Nov. 19 at 6 p.m.
