Game Recap: Men's Hockey | | Earl Zukerman

HOCKEY (m): Boyd's burst bites as Ravens rule roost

OTTAWA – Aaron Boyd tallied twice as the Carleton Ravens blanked visiting McGill 2-0 in OUA men's hockey before a capacity crowd at the Ice House, Friday.

This was the first time that the Redbirds and Ravens had crossed paths since Jan. 4, 2020 when McGill came away with a 3-0 road shutout. Carleton improved their record to 30-38-1 in 69 lifetime confrontations against McGill.

The Redbirds had a 31-29 edge in shots and generated a handful of good scoring chances but couldn't solve Ravens junior netminder Mark Grametbauer of Halifax, who registered his second career shutout and improved to 2-1 on the season.

Boyd, a 6-foot-4 senior from Winnipeg, scored what proved to be the game-winning goal on a power-play at 13:00 of the second period, while McGill was serving a double minor penalty for high-sticking called on defenceman Taylor Ford. Boyd then added an insurance marker at 4:34 of the final stanza.

McGill came up empty on five power-play opportunities, while the Ravens went 1-for-4. The Redbirds are now 1-for-13 this season with the man-advantage.

Alexis Shank, a freshman from Laval, Que., drew his third straight starting assignment in the McGill net and made 27 saves in a losing cause as his record fell to 1-2.

Fourth-place McGill (1-2) has little time to dwell on this result as they will complete a back-to-back pair of games when they host UQTR on Saturday (Nov. 13) at 7 p.m. The Patriotes who defeated Ottawa 2-1 on Friday in Trois-Rivieres, are tied with Carleton (2-1) for first in the OUA Far East division with a 2-1 record.

REDBIRDS RAP: McGill was without the services of alternate captain Jordan-Ty Fournier, a rugged all-purpose forward, who was injured during practice on Thursday... The Redbirds have added another exhibition game to their schedule and will travel to Fredericton next month to confront UNB, currently the No.1 ranked team in the country. They will play UNB on Dec. 30 at 7 p.m. (AST) in the 16th annual edition of the Pete Kelly Challenge Cup, a one-game, winner-take-all format for a trophy, sponsored by Peterbilt Atlantic.
