MONTREAL –
Giovanna Tiberio of Montreal tallied a pair of goals as the McGill women's soccer team quadrupled Bishop's 4-1 to close out the regular season in spooky fashion on a Halloween Sunday, at rain-soaked Percival Molson Stadium.
The win vaulted McGill (7-4-3) past UQAM (7-5-2) and clinched third place ahead of the Citadins in the eight-team RSEQ conference. it was McGill's highest finish in the Quebec league standings since 2017 when the Martlets were third with a 5-5-4 record.
Ariel Carignan, a third-year defender from Sherbrooke, put the Gaiters on their heels after scoring in the second minute of play.
Tiberio then struck twice, netting the game-winner at the 30th minute mark to give McGill a 2-0 advantage heading into halftime. Five minutes after the intermission, the 23-year-old psychology senior added an insurance marker.
After veteran striker
Alexia Remillard of Repentigny, Que., made it 4-0 in the 70th minute, the only question that remained was whether McGill goalkeeper
Brenna Bordeniuk was going to get a shutout. The answer came in the 88th minute, when the gremlins took over. A Gaiters centering pass was redirected by a McGill player in the box who accidently headed the ball past her 'keeper for an own goal.
It ended McGill's bid for a fifth consecutive shutout over the Gaiters at 524 minutes, dating back to the 14th minute of a 3-1 victory on Sept. 21, 2018.
Bordeniuk, a freshman from Calgary, was credited with two saves for the victory, improving her regular season record to 7-3-1.
McGill had a marked territorial advantage with an 11-3 edge in shots on net and an 8-5 margin in corner kicks. There were only six fouls called in the contest, four of them against the Gaiters. There were no cards issued by the officials. Bishop's finished fifth with a 4-8-2 record and will miss the playoffs.
The Martlets, who battled BU to a scoreless draw in their earlier meeting, improved their lifetime record against Bishop's to 56-0-3 since the Gaiters joined the league in 1992.
McGill (7-4-3) will travel to Quebec City on Friday, Nov. 5 to confront second-place Laval (10-1-3) in sudden-death semifinal. The other semi features fourth-place UQAM against the undefeated Montreal Carabins (13-0-1).
MARTLET MURMURS: This was the final home appearance for as many as seven graduating forwards, three of whom still have eligibility remaining and are expected to return. Fifth-year veterans who have exhausted the university eligibility include 2019 all-star
Ariane Ducharme, along with
