MONTREAL -- Freshman
Annika Schmunk of Powell River, B.C., scored her first career goal and it proved to be the game-winner, as McGill thoroughly dominated but narrowly defeated last-place Sherbrooke 2-1 in women's soccer at Percival Molson Stadium, Sunday.
The Martlets had a huge 19-9 territorial advantage in attempted shots, including a 13-6 margin on net. McGill also held an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.
Striker
Thalia Krauth-Ibarz of Brossard, Que., opened the scoring in the 17th minute of play to give the home side a 1-0 lead that they took into halftime. It was her team-leading fourth marker and moved the kinesiology sophomore into a three-way tie for the league lead, with Sherbrooke's
Marilou Dugrenier and Laval's
Daphnée Blouin.
When Schmunk made it 2-0 in the 62nd minute, it appeared that the rout was on. However, Sherbrooke battled back and when
Mathilde Vigneault scored in the 86th minute, it left for a nail-biting finish.
Freshman goalkeeper
Brenna Bordeniuk of Calgary stopped two of three shots for the win, while Sherbrooke's
Sarah-Maude Bernard racked up eight saves in a losing cause.
The officials called 19 fouls in the game, 12 against McGill. The only card issued was a yellow to Martlets defender
Ariel Carignan.
At the halfway mark in the 14-game schedule, the Martlets are 3-2-2 and sit tied for third-place with UQAM (3-2-2) in the RSEQ conference standings, five points behind Laval (5-1-1).
McGill improved their head-to-head lifetime record against Sherbrooke to 9-10-2 since 2011.
