HOCKEY (w): Rookie rearguard MacLellan nets winner as Martlets topple Gaiters

MONTREAL -- A third period goal by rookie rearguard Lydia MacLellan proved to be the game winner as the McGill women's hockey team skated to a 4-3 triumph over Bishop's in the consolation round of the Theresa Humes Cup tournament at the Ed Meagher Arena, Sunday,

The Martlets finished third in the four-team tourney with a 2-1 record, Montreal, which swept all three games, won the championship game with a 3-1 decision over host Concordia (1-2).

Rounding out the scoring for the Martlets was Laura Jardin of Calgary, with her third in four preseason contests, freshman Emma Piers of Beaconsfield, Que., and rookie Raelene Verbruggen of Ancaster, Ont.,

McGill, which had a 27-25 edge in shots, seemed in total control with a 4-1 lead after a pair of early in the third period but the Gaiters roared back with goals from Ella Watson and Gabrielle Rousseau to turn the final 10 minutes into a nail-biter.

Martlets netminder Tricia Deguire of Sherbrooke, Que., made 22 saves for the win, while Faith Miller had 23 saves and took the loss for the Gaiters.

Seven minor penalties were called in the contest. McGill was 1-for-2 on the power-play, while Bishop's connected on two of five chances.

Forward Jade Downie-Landry of St. Jean, Que., was the only McGill player named to the all-tournament team. She scored one goal and had a pair of assists in three games.

McGill is now 3-1 overall in preseason play and gets a week off before hosting Concordia on Friday, Oct. 15 in a 7 p.m. faceoff at McConnell Arena.
