HOCKEY (w): Stingers double Martlets in preseason affair

MONTREAL – Chloe Gendreau of Sherbrooke, Que., scored one goal and added an assist as visiting Concordia skated to a 4-2 victory over McGill in women's preseason hockey at McConnell Arena, Friday.

The teams were tied at 1-1 after the opening period but Concordia tallied twice in the middle stanza to take a 3-1 lead. The Martlets narrowed the gap to 3-2 in the third, but Concordia regained the two-goal bulge with a power-play marker five minutes later.

McGill senior Christiana Colizza of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., opened the scoring with her third of the preseason only 2:35 after the initial puck drop.  It tied her for the team lead in goals with Laura Jardin, who was kept off the scoresheet.

Sandrine Veillette, a defenceman from Sherbrooke, evened the count for the Stingers at 12:17.

In the second period, Gendreau connected on a Concordia power-play and teammate Jessymaude Drapeau of Rivière-du-Loup, Que., made it 3-1 at 18:52.

In the final period, McGill's Ria Stevens, a junior from Los Gatos, Calif., scored at 7:33 but five minutes later, Audrey Belzile of St. Hyacinthe, Que., connected on the power-play to conclude the scoring.

The Stingers had a 34-23 edge in shots and went 2-for-4 with the extra attacker, while McGill went 0-for-4.

Goalkeeper Alice Philbert of St. Bruno, Que., saved 21 of 23 shots to earn the victory, while Tricia Deguire of Sherbrooke, Que., saved 30 of 34 and took the loss. Deguire also took a rare roughing penalty early in the final period after numerous Concordia players tried to disrupt her by skating through her goal crease.

The Zamboni machine had mechanical difficulties after the first intermission and there was no flood after the second period. Both coaches were consulted and agreed to play the third period without a fresh ice surface.

Concordia improved to 5-2 in preseason play and will travel to Queen's on Oct. 17, while McGill (3-2) will host the Gaels on Oct. 22.
