MONTREAL -- Three different players scored as McGill tripled Sherbrooke 3-1 in a must-win men's soccer game at Percival Molson Stadium, Sunday.
The result extended Sherbrooke's winless streak to 0-6-1 and improved McGill's record to 2-3-1. The Redbirds now sit two points behind fourth-place Concordia (2-1-3) in the hunt for the final playoff berth in the seven-team RSEQ conference.
Freshman
Joseph Getz of Vancouver, B.C., senior
Cameron Butterfield of Ottawa and
Gaetan Hamid, a sophomore from France, scored for the Redbirds, who doubled their total offensive output from three to six goals.
Reese Carlow, a 19-year-old Arts freshman midfielder from Osaka, Japan, was credited with a pair of assists.
Mathieu Jodar replied for the Vert & Or, tying the score at 1-1 in the 13th minute of play.
Veteran goalkeeper
Chris Cinelli-Faia, a senior from Dollard des Ormeaux, Que., made his second start of the season after returning from injury and kicked aside five of six shots for the victory. Sherbrooke's
Antoine Goulet took the loss, conceding three goals on six shots.
McGill, which led 2-1 at halftime, was outshot 14-11 in attempts and 8-7 in shots on net. Sherbrooke also had a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. It was a testy affair, featuring 30 fouls and eight cards, six of them to Sherbrooke. The McGill players issued cautions were Getz and
Matthew Marshall.
The Vert & Or played shorthanded for the final 20 minutes when
Aldo-Gabriel Gutierr was ejected in the 70th minute after receiving his second yellow card.
McGill (2-3-1) plays at Laval (3-1-2) on Friday, Oct. 8 in an 8:15 p.m. kickoff. Sherbrooke (0-5-1) will look to snap their winless streak in Trois-Rivieres (3-2-1) the same night.
