VOLLEYBALL (w): Laval gains upperhand on Martlets


QUEBEC CITY – Charlene Robitaille of St. Jean, Que., score a game-high 18 points but it was all in vain as the McGill women's volleyball team fell 3-1 to Laval at the Centre PEPS, Friday. Despite winning the opening set 25-21, McGill dropped the next three 25-21, 25-20 and 25-22.

The Rouge et Or had the upper hand in most of the key statistical categories, with an 11-2 advantage in service aces, a 56-45 margin in kills and a 77-55 edge in digs. McGill only dominate in blocks, with an 8-2 margin.

Robitaille, a senior middle blocker, paced the Martlets with 15 kills and one service ace and four assisted blocks, to go along with eight digs. Teammate Clara Poire, a kinesiology junior from Blainville, Que., of contributed 14 points, all on the strength of 14 kills.

Four members of the host Rouge et Or reached double digits in scoring, with Beatrice Lamarche registering 16 points, followed by Eloise Ross-Tremblay (15), Justine Raymond (13) and Roxane St-Amand (10).

McGill, which dropped to 2-2 in regular season play, will now focus on hosting the Montreal Carabins (2-2) at Love Competition Hall, on Halloween Sunday at 1 p.m. Laval, which improved to 3-1, will be off until Nov. 6 when they host Sherbrooke (3-1) in a first-place showdown.
