MONTREAL –
Aiden Warnholtz scored a game-high 14 points as the Carleton Ravens coasted to a 63-39 victory over McGill in a preseason hoops battle of the birds at Love Competition Hall, Saturday.
It was the Redbirds first meeting with the omnipotent Carleton program since a 76-71 loss at the Nationals in Saskatoon on March 11, 2018. The two sides have met only nine times since the turn of the century, with the majority of their matchups occurring prior to 1999. Carleton owns a 26-16 record all time against McGill and has won eight consecutive meetings.
Jamal Mayali of Toronto was the only member of the Redbirds to score in double-digits. The 6-foot-1 guard scored 10 points, on 3-for-9 shooting, in addition to a 3-for-3 performance from the free-throw line.
Teammates
Quarry Whyne and
Sidney Gauthier added eight points and six rebounds apiece.
McGill won the opening quarter 14-12 but lapsed 21-6 in the second and 21-10 in the third before battling Carleton to a low-scoring 9-9 saw-off in the final quarter.
The much taller Ravens had a 41-30 edge in rebounding and a 22-8 advantage from points in the paint. They shot 32.2 per cent from the field (19/59), made seven of 23 treys and drained 18 of 25 free-throws. McGill shot only 25 per cent from the floor (12/48), made two of 17 from the arc and connected on 13 of 18 from the charity stripe.
Carleton, 3-1 in preseason play, begins their OUA schedule on Nov. 5 when they host Nipissing. McGill, which went 1-3 in exhibition action, will now focus on their regular season opener on Nov. 11, when the Concordia Stingers will make the short jaunt downtown for an 8 p.m. tip-off, following the women's game.
