HOCKEY (w): Manitob's Makenzie McCallum masterful as McGill conquers Queen's

MONTREAL -- Makenzie McCallum of Morden, Man., registered her first career hat-trick, including the game-winning goal, as the McGill women's hockey team cruised past visiting Queen's 5-2 in preseason play at McConnell Arena, Friday.

It was the eighth straight victory over Queen's for the Martlets, who led 2-0 after the first period and 4-1 after two.

McCallum, a 5-foot-8 forward, exploded for two goals in 42 seconds during the last minute of the middle stanza, turning a 2-1 lead into a 4-1 rout. The 20-year-old anatomy and cell biology junior added an empty-netter in the final minute of play to record only her second career multi-goal game. She also assisted on the game's first marker, by veteran sniper Jade Downie-Landry of St. Jean, Que., only 50 seconds after the opening face-off.

The other Martlets marker was tallied by senior Christiana Colizza of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., to put the home team ahead 2-0, just past the midway mark of the first period.

Replying for the Gaels was Scout Watkins-Southward in the second period and Nicole Posesorski in the third.

Winning goaltender Sophie Lajeunesse, a civil engineering freshman from Calgary, saved 26 of 28 shots as her preseason record improved to 2-1. Kathryn Jalink took the loss between the pipes for the Gaels, stopping 22 of 26 shots.

Queen's was 1-for-3 on the power-play, while McGill was 0-for-3.

The Gaels, who dropped to 0-2, including a 3-1 loss at Concordia last week, will return home to Kingston overnight for an exhibition contest on Saturday (Oct. 23) against Ontario Tech at 7:30 p.m.

Up next for McGill (4-2) will be a visit from the Montreal Carabins on Sunday (Oct. 24) at 3 p.m. at McConnell Arena. It will mark the Martlets final preseason game before the RSEQ conference schedule begins on Oct. 29.
