MONTREAL – Freshman
Audrey-Anne Veillette scored twice, including the game-winner as the Université de Montréal Carabins edged McGill 4-3 in women's hockey on Day 2 of Concordia's Theresa Humes Tournament, Saturday, at the Ed Meagher Arena. The result vaulted U de M into Sunday's final, while McGill was relegated to the consolation game.
The Martlets had a 35-24 advantage in shots on net but U de M led 3-2 after a wild opening period and the teams traded goals in the middle stanza. The final period was scoreless.
After a slow start, the final 10 minutes of the first period featured five goals. Veillette opened the scoring at 10:20 but McGill senior
Jade Downie-Landry evened the count at 13:34, converting a pass from freshman
Emily Piers. It only took 20 seconds for sophomore
Jessika Boulanger to regain the advantage for the Carabins. They upped the lead to 3-1 when rookie
Emily-Renee Paquin connected at 17:19 but only 29 seconds later,
Christiana Colizza, a senior from Sault Ste, Marie, Ont., narrowed the gap to 3-2.
Veillette struck again at 9:11 of the second period but McGill countered just 106 seconds later when rookie defenceman
Mia Vaananen scored her first collegiate marker.
Marika Labrecque drew an assist on the play.
Third-year Carabins goalkeeper
Maude Trevisan saved 32 of 35 shots for the win, while freshman
Sophie Lajeunesse made 20 saves on 24 shots in a losing cause.
Both sides were fruitless on the power-play, with Montréal going 0-for-3, while the Martlets went 0-for-2.
McGill, which is 2-1 overall in preseason, is even at 1-1 in this tournament and will cross paths with Bishop's in the consolation game on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. The Martlets blanked BU 4-0 in their previous meeting, last week in Lennoxville.
The result was the second victory of the tourney for U de M (2-0), which defeated Bishop's 3-1 on Friday and will advance to Sunday's tourney finale against the host Stingers (1-1) at 7 p.m.
