MONTREAL – Forward
Levi Londole of LaSalle, Que., scored a game-high 15 points as division-leading McGill outlasted Concordia 58-54 in men's university basketball to clinch the regular season pennant and capture the second annual George Lengvari Cup, Saturday, at the John Dore Court.
With the crucial road win, McGill improved to 11-4 and one game remaining, while locking up first place in the Quebec league for the seventh time in eight years. The Stingers, meanwhile, fell to 9-5 with two games left to play and can still finish second or third in the five-team conference.
It was a real defensive battle and the 58 points was McGill's lowest offensive output in regular season play since a 70-58 home-court loss to Concordia on Nov. 18, 2017. It was also the team's lowest score in a victory since a 53-47 decision at Laval on Jan. 6, 2017.
McGill led 16-9 after the opening quarter and had accrued a nine-point lead early in the second but Concordia roared back to lead 30-28 at halftime. The visitors responded in kind, winning the third stanza 18-10 but a fourth quarter 14-12 edge by Concordia fell short.
The Stingers had a 40-31 advantage in rebounding and a 4-3 edge in blocked shots. McGill had a 9-6 margin in steals while Concordia committed a plethora of turnovers with 23 compared to McGill's 11.
Londolé shot 7-for-12 and was 1-for-2 from the line. He pulled down four rebounds and posted a pair of blocked shots in 35 minutes of play. The 6-foot-8 physical education junior also made one of two spectacular slam dunks in the game, an infrequent sight in RSEQ contests. Teammate
Sam Jenkins, a junior forward from Hamilton, Ont., collected the other.
Supporting Londolé in double digits was junior
Jamal Mayali of Toronto with 14 points and sophomore
Quarry Whyne of Montreal with 13.
Adrian Armstrong led Concordia's attack with a team-high 13 points. The London, Ont., native was particularly dangerous from long range, shooting 3-for-8 from beyond the arc.
McGill connected on 35.3 per cent of their attempts from the floor (24/68) and made three of nine from downtown. The Stingers shot 33.9 from the field (20/59) but only sank four of 22 treys. Both sides shot an identical 62.5 per cent from the foul-line although Concordia benefited from 10 of 16 attempts, compared to McGill's 5-for-8.
McGill (11-4) concludes its regular season at home against third-place UQAM (7-6) on Feb. 20 at 8 p.m. The Stingers also play on Feb 20, visiting Bishop's (6-8) before hosting Laval (2-12) two days later in their final game of the season.
GAME NOTES: Both editions of the Lengvari Cup have been won by the visiting team, with Concordia taking last year's matchup 86-69 on McGill turf (Jan. 21, 2019). The event is named in honour of long-time benefactor
George Lengvari, Jr., a native Montrealer and chairman of Lengvari Capital, Ltd., who presented the trophy in a post-game ceremony. Lengvari earned a bachelor's degree in economics from Loyola College (BA '63) – one of Concordia's two founding institutions -- and a law degree from McGill (BCL '66). During his varsity career, he was a forward and MVP of the Loyola Warriors team that won the Ottawa-St. Lawrence league title in 1962-63 and qualified for the first Canadian Final Four national championship. He went on to play three seasons at McGill, where he served as team captain of the men's basketball squad.
