SUDBURY, Ont -- Six different players scored as McGill skated to a 6-1 triumph over the Laurentian University Voyageurs in OUA men's hockey at Countryside Arena, Saturday.
it was the fourth consecutive victory for McGill, which improved to 16-8-2 and moved past Ottawa (15-7-3) into sole possession of third place in the 10-team OUA East. With only two games remaining before playoffs, McGill can finish third or fourth.
McGill, which improved their lifetime record to 699-427-58 overall against Ontario-based schools, also extended their win streak over the Voyageurs to 15 in a row -- since a 5-2 setback on Oct. 18, 2014 -- and is now 26-5-2 in 33 meetings with Laurentian since their first rendezvous 1988.

McGill held a 39-27 edge in shots, bouncing back from a 17-10 disadvantage in the first period to an authoritative 15-3 margin in the second and a 14-7 edge in the final stanza. they led 1-0 after one and 2-0 after two before a 4-1 outburst in the last period.

Montrealer
Antoine Dufort-Plante opened the scoring with a power-play marker at 14:47 of the opening period. The third-year forward has now tallied 30 goals and 65 points overall in 110 appearances for McGill.

Christophe Lalonde from Mirabel, Que., contined his torrid pace with what proved to be the game-winner, on the man advantage at 12:31 of the second period, upping the score to 2-0.

Laurentian forward
Russell Nowry responded with the sole goal for his team at 2:04 of the final stanza. But centre
Samuel Tremblay of St. Hubert, Que., scored an insurance marker 35 seconds into the third period, giving the visitors a 3-1. Tremblay, a co-captain who missed the entire first semester with a preseason injury, added a pair of helpers and since returning to the lineup, has a 3-7-10 record in eight contests.
McGill then exploded for three goals in a four-minute spane, with markers from
Blake Hayward (11:04),
Anthony Boucher (14:28) and
Quinn Syrydiuk (15:05). Both Boucher and Syrydiuk finished with a three-point soiree.

Freshman netminder
Emanuel Vella, a recruit from the OHL's Flint Firebirds, stopped 26 of 27 shots and was credited with the win. The 6-foot-4 undeclared arts student improved his record to 4-3 in seven starts this season, with a 2.45 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage.

Brayden Lachance, blocked 33 of 39 attempts as his record tumbled to 0-4.

McGill went 2-for-3 on the power-play and killed off all three penalties taken. The PP unit is operating at 15.7 per cent while the PK unit is first in the OUA and third in the nation with a lofty 89.6 efficiency.

The Voyageurs, who dropped their last-place record to 5-18-2, saw their magic number to be eliminated for a playoff berth reduced to one point. Any loss in their final three games (or any win or overtime loss by RMC or Nipissing) will put an end to Laurentian's campaign. They will travel to North Bay on Tuesday, Feb, 4 to play Nippising (17-6-3), in an uncommon 11 a.m. start in a Stay-in-School promotion for children.
McGill, which has two games remaining before post-season play, will host No. 6 ranked UQTR (18-6-3) on Saturday. Puck-drop is 7 p.m. at McConnell Arena. After spliting a pair of preseason games with the Pats, McGill is 0-2 against them in OUA play, including a 1-0 overtime loss in their last meeting (Jan. 22).
