Volleyball Martlets topple No. 4 ranked Toronto to take tourney title

TORONTO -- Three McGill players reached double-digits in scoring as the Martlets toppled No. 4 ranked Toronto 3-1 to sweep the National Invitational women's volleyball tournament at the Goldring Centre, Sunday. The set scores were 25-23, 25-23, 25-27 and 25-14.

McGill, which improved to 15-11 overall, went 3-0 at the tourney, including a 3-1 victory over No.2 Ryerson on Friday and a 3-2 decision over McMaster on Saturday.

The Varsity Blues, who dropped to 12-7 overall, had a slight edge in kills (45-42) and service aces (7-5). McGill had a narrow advantage in digs (67-65), while both sides ended up with six stuff blocks each.

Myriam Robitaille had 18 points to pace the Martlets, while Victoria Iannotti and Elisabeth Perrault each registered a dozen points.

Robitaille contributed 12 kills, one ace, five blocks and four digs. Iannotti collected 11 kills, one block and 10 digs. Perrault had 11 kills, one ace, 1.5 blocks and 10 digs.

Both teams will now shift their focus back to the regular season.

"We played well in this tournament, beating some Top 10 teams and it was a good confidence builder and an opportunity for us to do some team-building," said McGill head coach Rachele Beliveau, whose troops rarely have overnight trips in the schedule.

"A tournament like this gives our team the opportunity to play more as a unit and to focus strictly on volleyball, without having to worry about school, homework and other things. Everyone was well-rested and there was less pressure, so that usually translates into more success."

McGill sits fifth in the six-team RSEQ conference with a 4-7 record and nine games left to play. The Martlets will host division-leading Laval (8-3) on Friday, Jan. 10 in a 6:30 p.m. start at Love Competition Hall.

Toronto, which is tied with Ryerson atop the OUA East standings at 8-1 each, will host Nipissing (2-7)  in back-to-back contests on Jan. 17-18.
