MONTREAL - Montrealer
Nadege Pluviose scored a game-high 14 points and
Sirah Diarra of Longueuil, Que., posted a "double-double" as McGill dominated Concordia 75-53 in a women's basketball matinee at Love Competition Hall, Saturday afternoon.
It was Martlets second win over ConU in three days and their third consecutive victory. The result was McGill's highest offensive output in a regular season season game in almost a year, dating back to a 75-63 conquest at UQAM on Feb. 8, 2019.
The win also improved McGill's record to 5-7 in league play and salvaged their season as they now have pulled themselves back into the playoff race. With four games remaining on their schedule, the Martlets now find themselves in a three-way tie with Bishop's (5-4) and UQAM (5-6) for the last three playoff spots in the five-team Quebec conference.
Concordia dropped to last place with a 3-6 record. The Martlets, who wore pink uniforms as part of their annual "Shoot for the Cure" game -- in support of breast cancer awareness -- improved their overall record against Concordia to 68-66 since 1981.
McGill led 18-7 after a dominant first quarter and had a 42-28 advantage going into halftime. The Stingers took the third with a slight 12-11 margin and McGill led the final quarter with a 22-13 advantage.
Pluviose, a 5-foot-10 forward, shot 6-for-8 from the floor, including 1-for-1 from the beyond the arc, and was 1-for-3 on free-throws. She also contributed six rebounds and three assists.
Diarra, a second-year transfer from Clemson, pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds in 25 minutes on the court. The 6-foot-1 centre added three steals, an assist, one blocked shot and a steal. Diarra shot 5-for-9 from the floor and went 1-for-2 from the free-throw line.
Another key contributor for McGill, for the second straight outing, was sophomore guard
Trishia Villedrouin, a Montrealer who scored 11 points and pulled down three rebounds.
Concordia guard
Nelly Owusu led her team with a dozen points, shooting 5-of-16 from the floor and sinking 2-of-4 freebies. Teammate
Caroline Task contributed 10 points.
McGill held a 39-31 advantage in rebounds and had a 2-0 margin in blocked shots. The Stingers failed to benefit from a 20-13 advantage in turnovers and a 12-7 edge in steals.
The Martlets shot a sizzling 50.8 per cent from the field (30/59), 33.3 from beyond the arc (6/18) and drained nine of 17 attempts from the line. Concordia shot 32.8 per cent from the field (22/67), went 2-for-17 from downtown and 7-for-12 in free-throw shooting.
The Stingers (3-6) return to the court on Thursday (Jan. 30), with a 6 p.m. tip-off against Bishop's (5-4) at the John Dore Court. McGill (5-7), which gets an 11-day bye, will host the Gaiters on Thursday, Feb. 6, at Love Competition Hall, in a 6 p.m. tip-off.
