Citadins arrest Martlet volleyballers in key confrontation

MONTREAL -- Sabrina Mayer registered a game-high 14.5 points as the visiting UQAM Citadins swept McGill 25-14, 25-10 and 25-20 in a key women's volleyball contest at Love Competition Hall, Sunday.

The result, UQAM's second win in three regular season meetings with McGill, put the third-place Citadins in the driver's seat for a playoff berth in the Quebec conference. UQAM improved to 8-5 and sits tied with Sherbrooke for the third and fourth place in the race for post-season play.

McGill, which finished first last season, sits fifth in the six-leam league with a 4-9 record. The Martlets need to win at least five of their seven contests in order to qualify.

Mayer was joined in double digits by teammates Gabrielle Archambault (13 pts) and Nicole Frederique (11).

Leading the scoring for McGill was Claire Vercheval, back from the injury list, who tallied 10.5 points in what was her first league game since Nov. 29. The 6-foot-1 power-hitter from Ste. Julie, Que., led the Martlets in both kills (7) and stuff blocks (3.5), to go along with a half-dozen digs.

McGill's other leading scorers were Charlene Robitaille (7.5 pts) and Myriam Robitaille (6.5 pts).

UQAM had the edge in kills (35-24), aces (12-4) digs (48-41) and assists (32-23). Both teams registered nine stuff blocks.

The Martlets (4-9) will now shift their focus to their next two games, both must-win affairs against last place Ottawa. They play the winless Gee-Gees (0-13) in the nation's capital on Sunday, Jan. 19 at 2 p.m., followed by a return engagement at Love Competition Hall on Jan. 24 at 6:30 p.m.
