KINGSTON, ONT -- Third-baseman
Pierre-Olivier Avoine of Val d'Or, Que., racked up four hits, scored one run and knocked in two others as the McGill University baseball team walloped Queen's 13-4 to sweep a doubleheader at Megaffin Park, Sunday.
McGill also won the opener 7-0 on the strength of a five-hit shutout by pitcher
Sam Greene of Philadelphia and a home run from catcher
Michael Gaudioso, an engineering sophomore from Livingston, N.J.
In the nightcap, McGill had a 13-4 edge in hits, scoring in each of the first six innings. They led 1-0 after one, then added four in the second, one in the third, four in the fourth and two more in the fifth to jump into a 12-0 lead before Queen's could reply.
Starter
Thomas Mienkowski tossed an 81-pitch gem. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound righty from Toronto allowed one earned run on three hits over six innings for the win, improving to 3-0 on the season. He struck out seven and walked just one.
Avoine, a first-year transfer from Galveston College who batted second, went 4-for-4 to lead the offence. The only other multi-hit performance was produced by freshman
Carlos Vallejos, the designated hitter from Ottawa, who went 2-for-3 with a walk, one run scored and an RBI.
