Phil Veilleux scored twice -- including the winning run on an error -- as Concordia outlasted McGill 7-5 in extra innings at Gary Carter Field, Wednesday.
The result halted Concordia's 17-game losing streak to McGill and evened their season series at 1-1. It marked the Stingers first win over their cross-town rivals since an 8-7 decision on Oct. 5, 2015.
ConU led 1-0 after three innings and 3-1 after the fourth but McGill forced extra innings with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh. The Stingers scored twice in the top of the eighth but McGill bounced back with two of their own.
Both sides pounded out 11 hits and made three errors.
Veilleux, who batted fifth, went 1-for-4 with a one-out base-on-balls in the ninth to spark the winning rally after a
Philippe Soucy liner was dropped by McGill left-fielder
Vincent Ruzzolo. Soucy then scored the insurance run from second base after
Sam Fagen stroked a single to left. Fagen finished 3-for-5 at the plate.
Charles Winans and
Auguste Guern each racked up two hits for McGill.
Josh Heffel collected the win in relief for Concordia. He pitched two innings, allowing one run on three hits, two walks and striking out one.
Brett Patterson started, surrendering no runs on three hits over 2.1 innings, striking out one and walking one
Bowen duPhilly, the fourth McGill pitcher of the evening, took the loss. He allowed a pair of runs (both unearned) on one hit and one walk.
Zach Finkelstein started the game for McGill. He allowed seven hits and three runs over four innings, striking out eight and walking three.
Concordia, now 2-3, will host the Capital City Reds from Ottawa in a doubleheader on Sept. 14.
McGill, which dropped to 8-4 on the season, will head south of the border this weekend. Saturday's game at St. Michael's College in Vermont has been canceled and McGill will play a noon doubleheader on Sunday against SUNY-Adirondack, in Glens Falls, N.Y.
