MONTREAL – McGill goalkeeper
Chris Cinelli-Faia made nine saves and Concordia's
Julian Petrilli registered 11 of his own as the bitter cross-town rivals grounded out a dramatic 2-2 stalemate in RSEQ men's university soccer, Sunday, at Concordia Stadium.
The result extended McGill's undefeated streak to 4-0-1 over the Stingers since a 1-0 loss on Oct. 30, 2016, which knocked McGill out of a playoff berth.
The visitors had a 13-11 shots advantage in a thrilling back-and-forth clash with both teams pulling ahead and falling behind before the final whistle.
Cinelli-Faia, an acrobatic 5-foot-8, 160-pound physical education sophomore from Montreal, was selected as McGill, player of the game by Concordia's coaching staff. He was coming off a five-save 3-2 upset over division-leading UQTR, Friday
Despite Concordia boasting two of the conference's top 10 goal scorers on their squad, it was an unfortunate 15th minute McGill own goal miscue that broke the ice. But McGill evened the score 15 minutes later when senior
Dalin Saheb converted a pass from striker
Mehdi Ibn-Brahim.
Moments before the halftime whistle, rookie
Vincent Lipka of Weehawken, N.J., fired a shot past Stingers 'keeper
Julian Petrilli to give McGill a 2-1 lead.
But less than two minutes into the second half, Concordia's
Yacine Ait-Slimane found the back of the net to earn the game-tying marker. It was Concordia's second draw of the season, after a 1-1 result against Laval in their home opener back in late August.
"We lost two points today," said a disappointed McGill head coach
Marc Mounicot. "We had the momentum after scoring the second goal but we conceded the tying goal after (poor) defensive positioning. We had our chances and pushed hard but the overall execution should have been better in front of the net. We lacked some killer instinct.
"Despite that, it was a positive weekend with a win and tie. Now we are looking forward to the challenge of playing Montreal, the defending national champions, on our field this Thursday. They have won each of their first four games and have not conceded a single goal. This should be a real showcase for the game as we have the players to do something special."
McGill (1-2-1) will host the Carabins (4-0) in the friendly confines of Percival Molson Stadium on Sept. 19 at 8:15 p.m. The following day, Concordia (1-1-2) visits the natural turf on Stade Saputo to battle UQAM (2-2-1).
